DAHAB, A GOLDEN PLACE IN THE DESERT
Dahab is a small town located on the southeast coast of Egypt in the Gulf of Aqaba part of the Red Sea. It is situated about an hour drive from the larger town of Sharm el Sheikh. This former Bedouin fishing village was founded during the Israeli occupation of Sinai, the name is derived from the Arabic word gold, referring to Dahab’s beautiful golden beaches.
Dahab was, during the 60s and 70s, known as a hippie haven, where free spirited people from all over the world could meet. This atmosphere is still present today. Dahab is also well known for water sports including scuba diving, free diving, snorkeling, windsurfing and kite-surfing. However, the best part of Dahab is that mass tourism, which can be found in other dive sites in Egypt like Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm el Sheikh, has not been established in Dahab. So Dahab offers you all the modern comforts of a resort town with the atmosphere of a small hippie haven.
