SS THISTLEGORM

BEST WRECK DIVE IN THE WORLD!

SS THISTLEGORM

Dive one of the most legendary wrecks in the world.

The SS Thistlegorm is without doubt the most famous wreck in the Red Sea — and one of the most exciting dives you can experience anywhere. Resting on the seabed since 1941, this remarkably well-preserved WWII cargo ship is packed with history, adventure, and unforgettable marine life.

We depart early morning from the port of Sharm el Sheikh and enjoy breakfast on board during the scenic sail to the wreck. The first dive explores the impressive exterior, while the second takes you inside to discover its famous cargo — motorbikes, trucks, and wartime relics frozen in time.

After lunch, we continue to Ras Mohammed National Park for a third dive at either Yolanda Reef or Shark Reef — the perfect way to complete an epic day of Red Sea diving.

History of the SS Thistlegorm

During World War II, the SS Thistlegorm was a British freighter transporting vital supplies to Allied troops in North Africa. Capable of carrying up to 9,000 tons of cargo, she left England on a long route via the Cape of Good Hope, loaded with military equipment including jeeps, motorbikes, trucks, ammunition, and uniforms destined for the British Eighth Army.

On October 6, 1941, while anchored near Sha’ab Ali reef close to the Suez Canal, the ship was attacked by German bombers flying from Crete. Two bombs struck the ammunition hold, causing a massive explosion and sinking the vessel almost instantly.

The wreck was first discovered in 1956 by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, but its exact position was later lost. It was rediscovered again in 1991 — and has since become one of the most famous wreck dives in the world.
